Dr. Ghulam Nabi Fai Urges Islamic Movements to Move “From Survival to Contribution” at Kuala Lumpur Conference

Date:

Spokesman Report

KUALA LUMPUR: An international conference titled “Islamic Movements in the New World Order: Building a Resilient Pluralistic Society Based on Malaysia Madani” was held on September 26, 2026, jointly organised by WADAH, ABIM and PKPIM. Speakers included Malaysia’s Minister of Religious Affairs Dr. Zulkifli Hassan, Turkish Ambassador Navzat Uyank, PKPIM President Ahmed Fahmi Muhammad Samsuddin and several scholars. Dr. Fai praised the organisers’ discipline and unity, and the strong turnout of young men and women.

Addressing the gathering, Dr. Fai, Chairman of the World Forum for Peace and Justice, said the world is entering an uncertain, more multipolar era. He urged Islamic movements to see this as an opportunity to ask what they can contribute to humanity. He highlighted Malaysia Madani, championed by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, as a framework for reconciling diversity with national unity, and said commitment to Islam need not conflict with pluralism.

Placing the discussion in historical context, he said colonialism caused an intellectual and religious crisis in Muslim societies, citing Muhammad Iqbal, Khurshid Ahmad, Anwar Ibrahim and Hassan Turabi. He said the task is neither to imitate the West nor reject it, but to understand, engage and contribute.

Fai called on Muslims to become producers of global discourse, investing in scholars, universities, think tanks and media to address artificial intelligence, the environment, poverty, inequality and human rights. He urged engagement with the Muslim diaspora as a reservoir of expertise, not just funding, and said Muslims should aim for contribution to the West, not mere survival.

He backed international dialogue initiatives such as the UN Alliance of Civilizations, said Islamophobia should be confronted through scholarship and engagement as well as protest, and stressed that opposition to corruption and injustice, and respect for human dignity, must apply universally.

He concluded that Muslims should be seen as a community contributing to humanity, helping to shape history rather than merely surviving it.
