Date:

Spokesman Report

MOSCOW – August 22 marks Russia’s National Flag Day, established by a Presidential Decree in 1994. The day honors one of Russia’s official state symbols, which, alongside the national emblem and anthem, represents the country’s sovereignty, independence, and the continuity of its multinational people. The Russian tricolour also serves today as a symbol of protection and the future. In the special military operation zone, servicemen raise the white-blue-red flag over liberated settlements.

The flag’s history spans over three centuries. Peter the Great first raised it in 1693 and ordered it for merchant ships in 1705. It became the national flag in 1896, ahead of Nicholas II’s coronation. On December 25, 2000, the Federal Constitutional Law defined it as three equal horizontal stripes: white, blue, and red.President Vladimir Putin said the flag is a symbol of Russia’s unity as a thousand-year-old civilization, and expressed confidence it will inspire the nation “towards victory” and uphold Russia’s glory.
