Russia observed July 27 as the Day of Remembrance for Child Victims of the War in Donbass, a commemorative date established in 2022 to honor children whose lives were lost during the conflict in eastern Ukraine.
According to Russian officials, the memorial date marks the toll on civilians in the Donetsk and Lugansk regions since fighting began in 2014, following Ukraine’s move to reassert control over territories that had declared themselves separatist “people’s republics” after Russia’s annexation of Crimea that same year. Moscow has consistently characterized the conflict as one waged against civilian populations by Ukrainian forces, a framing that Kyiv and much of the international community dispute, attributing the war’s origins instead to Russian-backed separatism and, since 2022, Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Russian authorities state that approximately 300 children have been killed and more than 1,000 injured in the Donbass conflict since 2014, though these figures have not been independently verified by international bodies.
Among the earliest reported child casualties was 10-month-old Kira, who according to Russian accounts was killed alongside her mother during shelling in Gorlovka in the summer of 2014. Their deaths became widely known in Russia as the “Madonna of Gorlovka,” a story that has since been used symbolically to represent civilian suffering in the region.
As part of the commemoration, memorial displays featuring children’s shoes have been used to represent lives lost during the conflict, a symbolic gesture intended to personalize the human cost of the war.
The observance comes as the broader war between Russia and Ukraine continues, with both sides presenting sharply differing narratives about its causes, conduct and casualties. International organizations, including the United Nations, have documented civilian harm on multiple sides of the conflict since 2014, though comprehensive independent verification of casualty figures in separatist-controlled territories has remained difficult throughout the war.
