Every year on 15 July, the people of Brunei Darussalam come together to celebrate the birthday of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam. This important national holiday is a time for reflection, gratitude, and celebration, honouring a monarch whose leadership has shaped the nation’s remarkable journey of peace, prosperity, and stability.

Following the abdication of his father on 5 October 1967, His Majesty ascended the throne as the 29th Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam. His coronation on 1 August 1968 was a magnificent occasion that reflected the nation’s rich heritage, ancient customs, and royal traditions.
His Majesty belongs to one of the world’s oldest continuing royal dynasties, with an almost unbroken lineage stretching back to the 14th century. In addition to serving as the Sultan, His Majesty also holds the office of Prime Minister, playing a central role in guiding Brunei’s development and governance.
Throughout his reign, His Majesty has been widely recognised for his commitment to preserving Brunei’s cultural and Islamic heritage while promoting national development, economic progress, education, healthcare, and the well-being of the country’s citizens. Under his leadership, Brunei has earned a reputation as a peaceful, stable, and prosperous nation with a high standard of living and a strong sense of national identity.
The celebration of His Majesty’s birthday is marked by colourful parades, ceremonial events, cultural performances, and gatherings across the nation. Citizens and residents proudly participate in the festivities, expressing their loyalty and appreciation for the Sultan’s dedicated service and leadership. The occasion also provides an opportunity for communities to come together in a spirit of unity, respect, and national pride.
As Brunei Darussalam celebrates this special day each year, the birthday of His Majesty the Sultan serves as a reminder of the enduring values of unity, harmony, and service to the nation. It is a fitting occasion to honour a monarch whose steadfast leadership continues to inspire confidence in Brunei’s future and strengthen the bonds that unite its people.
