Islamabad: Peach Blossom, Pho and Piano is a film that continues to resonate with audiences long after the final credits have rolled. Released in Vietnam on February 23, 2024, the film is directed by Phi Tien Son and produced by Phan Dinh Thanh and Nguyen Minh Phuong. This remarkable cinematic achievement has already secured the highest distinction in Vietnamese cinema, winning the prestigious Vietnamese Golden Kite Award for Best Feature Film.

As part of efforts to promote cultural understanding and artistic exchange, the Francophone Film Mela, in collaboration with the Vietnamese Embassy to Pakistan, organized a special screening of the acclaimed film in Islamabad. The event attracted a diverse audience, including intellectuals, diplomats, students, and members of civil society. Participants expressed admiration for Vietnamese culture and the country’s growing film industry, while acknowledging the significance of such initiatives in strengthening cultural ties and fostering friendship between Pakistan and Vietnam.

The film masterfully interweaves three simple yet deeply symbolic elements—peach blossoms, pho, and piano—into a compelling narrative that explores themes of identity, memory, belonging, and healing. Peach blossoms symbolize renewal, resilience, and hope; pho embodies the warmth of tradition, heritage, and home passed down through generations; while the piano serves as a powerful medium through which emotions are conveyed when words fall short. Together, these symbols form a narrative that is unmistakably Vietnamese in character while remaining universally relatable in its human experience.

One of the film’s most striking qualities is its quiet emotional power. Director Phi Tien Son deliberately avoids excessive melodrama and manufactured conflict, choosing instead a restrained storytelling approach that allows every scene and emotion to unfold naturally. The cinematography is visually captivating and painterly, capturing the mist-covered streets of Hanoi as well as the gentle glow of a piano placed within a modest room. Seemingly ordinary moments are elevated into profound expressions of meaning: a bowl of broth prepared with care, fingers gliding across piano keys, and delicate peach blossom petals drifting through the spring air.

The performances throughout the film are sincere, nuanced, and deeply authentic. Rather than merely portraying their characters, the actors embody them with remarkable emotional honesty. Equally noteworthy is the film’s piano-driven musical score, which functions as more than background accompaniment. It serves as an emotional guide, leading audiences through a journey that moves gracefully from nostalgia and longing to reconciliation and inner peace.

Beyond its artistic excellence, Peach Blossom, Pho and Piano stands as a heartfelt tribute to cultural heritage and enduring roots. The film reminds viewers that home is not defined solely by geography; it is also found in familiar flavors, cherished melodies, and treasured memories. At a time when audiences are often inundated with formula-driven entertainment, the film offers a refreshing and contemplative alternative. It does not rely on spectacle or noise to make its impact. Instead, it speaks softly yet powerfully, conveying a profound message: healing begins when individuals reconnect with their origins and cultural identity.

Having earned the Vietnamese Golden Kite Award for Best Feature Film, this poetic masterpiece demonstrates that gentle, thoughtfully crafted stories can leave the deepest and most lasting impressions. It is a must-watch for anyone who appreciates cinema that combines artistic integrity, emotional depth, and cultural richness.

During the Islamabad screening, guests expressed admiration for the film’s compelling storyline, evocative imagery, and emotional resonance. They also commended the organizers for bringing such an acclaimed work of Vietnamese cinema to Pakistani audiences. H.E. Mr. Pham Anh Tuan, Ambassador of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam to Pakistan, thanked participants for their attendance and highlighted the significance of Vietnamese culture and artistic expression. He emphasized the importance of sharing Vietnamese stories, traditions, and values with global audiences through the medium of film. His remarks provided participants with valuable insights into Vietnam’s cultural heritage and further contributed to enhancing mutual understanding and strengthening cultural relations between Pakistan and Vietnam.
