Lahore, 05 June 2026: In her special message on World Environment Day, Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif reiterated her extraordinary commitment to eliminating plastic in Punjab; and appealed to the public to plant as many trees as possible, and protect natural resources. She expressed gratitude for significant reduction in fog and improvement in environment over the past year. She appreciated Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb and her entire team for the notable environmental improvement in Lahore and other areas; and directed the authorities concerned to continue legal action against the use of substandard plastic bags. She also directed them to take steps for the earliest completion of region’s first Environment Observatory Project in Punjab; and said that the earth is a beautiful sphere; it is our duty to take all possible measures for its protection and survival. She added that positive results are emerging from effective and sustainable measures to reduce environmental pollution and control smog.
Chief Minister Punjab said that Punjab has become the first province to acquire early warning capabilities regarding environmental pollution; as for the first time, a state-of-the-art air quality forecast system is being used to monitor air pollution index across the province. She added that a 24/7 monitoring system of environmental agencies is operating at Punjab’s first ‘Environment Wall’; and highlighted that legal action continues against vehicles emitting smoke, brick kilns, burning crop residues, and other violations of environmental laws.
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif said that 30 modern anti-smog guns are being used effectively to control smog, while more smog guns are being brought for Lahore and other cities. She added that tree plantation campaigns are ongoing across the province for sustainable and effective environmental pollution control; and underscored that Punjab government is planting trees across the province under ‘Green Punjab and Plant for Pakistan vision.’
Chief Minister Punjab said that religion and ethical values also teach them cleanliness and environmental protection; so effective measures are essential to improve environment for the survival of new generation. She added that new generation will have to express a joint commitment to protect water, energy, and environmental resources; and asserted that on World Environment Day, they must raise awareness to protect nature, besides tackling pollution, and climate change. She appealed to the public to give up plastic and protect environment.
