Pakistani Student Makes History as First Elected VP at Queen Mary University of London

London LHassam Naeem has made history by becoming the first Pakistani ever elected as Vice President of Queen Mary Students’ Union, marking a proud and significant milestone for the Pakistani community in the United Kingdom.

Originally from Okara, Hassam moved to the UK in 2023 to pursue a Master’s degree in International Relations at Queen Mary University of London, where he graduated with distinction. Before beginning his postgraduate studies, he completed a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism in Pakistan, which helped build his strong foundation in leadership, communication, and public service.In an exclusive interview with Chaudhry Tabraiz Aurah, Hassam described his journey as one driven by resilience, ambition, and a deep commitment to serving both students and society.Now serving his second term as Vice President, Hassam has delivered remarkable achievements for students at Queen Mary.

His accomplishments include securing £2.2 million in scholarships for international students, successfully campaigning for the installation of bidets (Muslim showers) across university facilities, and launching the award-winning Cultural Unity Week, celebrating the diversity of more than 100 nationalities on campus.He has also actively lobbied UK policymakers to reduce financial burdens on international students and is currently campaigning for 100 percent scholarship opportunities for deserving students.

During his tenure, Hassam has worked tirelessly to promote a positive image of Pakistan among a student community representing more than 170 countries, serving as a strong cultural ambassador for his homeland. Through his leadership and engagement, he has highlighted Pakistan’s values of diversity, talent, and resilience on an international platform.His role has also provided opportunities to engage with and represent students before several prominent public figures and international personalities, further strengthening the global visibility of Pakistani youth leadership.

He currently serves as a student leader representing almost 31,000 students at Queen Mary University of London. He also successfully lobbied against the UK government’s proposed international student levy, ensuring relief for Queen Mary’s international student community.“My ambition is to work in public service and serve people in whatever capacity I can,” Hassam said. “True leadership is about creating opportunities, solving problems, and making a meaningful difference in people’s lives.Hassam Naeem’s historic achievement stands as a powerful example of the talent, resilience, and leadership of Pakistani youth abroad  proving that Pakistani students are not only building successful futures for themselves, but are also bringing pride and hope to Pakistan.
