Legend 17: From a sports drama to political rivalry   Munir Ahmed

After a longtime, maybe decades, the Russian embassy in Islamabad opened its door for a limited audience while the first calendar month of 2024 was drawing to a close. The occasion was the screening of a wonderful Russian language movie “Legend 17”.

“Legend 17” is a captivating sports drama that delves deep into the world of ice hockey, capturing the hearts of audiences with its powerful storytelling and remarkable performances. Set against the backdrop of the Soviet Union in the 1950s, the film follows the incredible journey of hockey legend Valeri Kharlamov as he rises from humble beginnings to become one of the greatest players of his time.

Directed by Nikolay Lebedev, “Legend 17” masterfully blends elements of sports, history, and human drama to create a compelling narrative that resonates with viewers. The film effectively captures the spirit of the era, transporting audiences to a time when ice hockey was more than just a game—it was a symbol of national pride and unity.

At the heart of the film is the extraordinary performance of Danila Kozlovsky, who brings Kharlamov to life with depth and authenticity. His portrayal of the legendary hockey player is both nuanced and powerful, capturing the struggles, triumphs, and inner turmoil of a man thrust into the spotlight at a young age.

Alongside Kozlovsky, Yelena Lyadova delivers a standout performance as Kharlamov’s wife, Nina. Their on-screen chemistry is palpable, adding an emotional depth to the film as they navigate the challenges of fame, love, and loss.

“Legend 17” is not just a sports movie; it’s a story of resilience, determination, and the human spirit. It celebrates the power of perseverance in the face of adversity and reminds us of the importance of chasing our dreams, no matter the obstacles.

Visually stunning and expertly crafted, the film’s ice hockey sequences are exhilarating to watch, capturing the intensity and excitement of the sport. Combined with a stirring musical score and breathtaking cinematography, “Legend 17” immerses viewers in the thrilling world of Soviet ice hockey, leaving a lasting impression long after the credits roll.

Let me say, “Legend 17” is a must-see film for sports enthusiasts and cinephiles alike. With its powerful performances, gripping storyline, and timeless themes, it stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of one of hockey’s greatest icons.

While “Legend 17” is primarily a sports drama focusing on the life of legendary hockey player Valeri Kharlamov, its narrative and context could indeed intersect with broader global political maneuvering, particularly considering the historical backdrop of the Soviet Union during the 1950s and 1960s. The movie also reflects the political hatred even in sports, and could also be linked to global political maneuvering.

Firstly, in the Cold War context as the film takes place during the height of the Cold War, a period marked by intense political rivalry between the United States and the Soviet Union. Ice hockey, particularly international competitions such as the Olympics, became a battleground for political supremacy. “Legend 17” could depict how sporting events were used as tools for propaganda and ideological competition between the two superpowers.

Secondly, the movie is all about national pride and identity. In the Soviet Union, sports were often used to bolster national pride and reinforce the superiority of the communist system. The success of Soviet athletes, including hockey players like Kharlamov, was heavily promoted as evidence of the strength and superiority of the Soviet way of life. The film could explore how Kharlamov’s achievements were leveraged for political purposes and how his persona became intertwined with the image of the Soviet state on the international stage.

Thirdly, it reflects defection and diplomatic fallout. Given the historical context of the Cold War, defections of athletes from the Soviet bloc to Western countries were not uncommon. “Legend 17” could touch upon the potential ramifications of such defections, including diplomatic tensions, propaganda battles, and the impact on international relations. Kharlamov’s interactions with foreign players and the broader geopolitical implications of his career could be explored within this framework.

Fourthly, censorship and state control. Soviet cinema was subject to strict censorship and government control, with filmmakers often having to navigate complex political sensitivities. “Legend 17” may reflect the challenges faced by filmmakers in balancing artistic expression with the demands of state ideology. The portrayal of Kharlamov’s life and career could be shaped by political considerations, with certain aspects being emphasized or omitted to align with the official narrative promoted by the Soviet government.

Overall, while “Legend 17” primarily focuses on the personal and professional journey of Valeri Kharlamov, its themes and historical context provide ample opportunities for exploring the intersection of sports, politics, and global maneuvering during the Cold War era. Through its portrayal of Kharlamov’s life, the film could offer insights into the broader geopolitical dynamics of the time and shed light on the complex relationship between sports, nationalism, and state power.

All thanks to His Excellency Albert P. Khorev. He is a newly appointed Russian ambassador in Pakistan, waiting to present his credentials to the President of Pakistan for over a month now. His resume published on the Russian embassy website mentions that he “has the diplomatic rank of Envoy Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, Second Class.” But, the step he has taken, by screening “Legend 17”, is surely a first-class effort. Opening of the Russian embassy doors for the locals shows his daring move to interact with the native stakeholders to understand the ground realities to promote bilateral relations.

Nations cannot come closer with closed-door policies. Even, we have to remain engaged with the enemies to find a window to resolve the conflicts. Engaging local citizens in diplomacy, especially in cultural diplomacy and people-to-people contact, has always delivered the best results. It’s good to see that Ambassador Albert P. Khorev is very proactive, and a believer of cultural diplomacy and interaction with the natives. Hoping to see the Pakistan-Russia relations getting better, and Ambassador Khorev playing the “Legend 17” in it.
