Standing in the middle of Hassan Abdal, Pakistan the revered Gurdwara Panja Sahib, a place of paramount significance for the Sikh all around the world, reasoning its historical legend of Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism. Which traced back to the summer of 1521 CE, when Guru Nanak along with his companion and devotee Bhai Mardana reached Hassan Abdal. As it was a hot day they were sitting under the shade of a tree reciting Kirtan, their divine melodies resonating with their gathered devotees. Amidst this tranquil ambiance, a Baba named Shah Wali Qandhari found himself perturbed by their presence.
According to legend, Bhai Mardana approached Shah Wali Qandari 3 times, humbly requesting water to quench his thirst. However, Shah blinded by his ego, responded rudely each time. Undeterred by the saint’s arrogance, Bhai Mardana persisted in his request. To this Shah ironically remarked: “Why don’t you ask your Master whom you serve?” Mardana went back to the Guru in a miserable state and said, “Oh lord! I prefer death to thirst but will not approach Shah the egoist again.” The Guru replied, “Oh Bhai Mardana! Repeat the Name of God, the Almighty and drink the water to your heart’s content.” The Guru put aside a big stone lying nearby, and a pure fountain of water sprang up and began to flow endlessly. On the other hand, at about the same time, the fountain of Shah dried up.
On watching this, Shah in rage threw a huge rock towards the Guru from the hill top. Guru stopped he hurled rock with his hand leaving his hand print in the rock. Observing the miracle, Shah became his devotee. The sacred imprint stands as a testament to the Guru’s compassion, wisdom, and unwavering devotion to the Almighty, which attracts devotees from across the world.
Along with religious significance Gurdwara holds architectural marvels that captivate the eye and tales that transcend time. The Mughal style architecture, attributed to Maharaja Ranjit Singh, adds a regal touch to the Gurdwara’s surroundings. The large pool formed by the spring’s water with golden fish flattering, creates a colorful tranquil atmosphere, inviting visitors to immerse themselves in its peaceful aura.
Gurdwara Panja Sahib stands as a living testament to Guru Nana’s teachings, offering a place where faith, compassion and unity intertwine. It’s captivating legend, marked by a handprint on a boulder, reminds us of the transformative power of humanity and devotion. As you step into the hallowed grounds of this Gurdwara, let the stories and serenity envelops you, and allow yourself to become a part of the rich tapestry of history and spirituality that Gurdwara Panja Sahib embodies.
