Dear Editor,
I am writing to express my concern about Karachi’s infrastructure struggling to cope with the annual monsoon rains, resulting in devastating floods that claim lives and cause widespread destruction. The city’s roads, already in disrepair, become impassable, leaving residents stranded. This year’s rainfall has been particularly severe, with over 10 inches of rain recorded in just a few days. The consequences have been catastrophic, with numerous deaths, injuries, and significant property damage.
According to reports, the 2022 floods affected over 80% of the city, with 15 inches of rainfall causing widespread chaos. Similarly, in 2023, 12 inches of rain resulted in 50 fatalities.
It is imperative that the authorities take immediate action to address the root causes of this recurring disaster. Investing in flood-resistant infrastructure, improving drainage systems, and enhancing emergency response mechanisms are critical steps towards mitigating the impact of future floods.
I urge the government to prioritize Karachi’s infrastructure development and take concrete measures to prevent such tragedies from occurring again.
I would be grateful if you could publish my letter and help awareness about this critical issue.
Sincerely,
Falak Muhammad
