Islamabad— The Embassy of the Russian Federation in Islamabad hosted a grand celebration to mark Defender of the Fatherland Day, a significant occasion that honors the service and sacrifices of Russian armed forces. The event brought together diplomats, military officials, and media representatives, reinforcing the historical and strategic ties between Russia and Pakistan.
The distinguished gathering was graced by Vice Admiral Abdul Samad HI (M) of the Pakistan Navy, who attended as the Chief Guest. Also present were Senator Sahar Kamran, H.E. Acting Ambassador of Afghanistan to Pakistan Maulvi Sardar Ahmed Shakib, Ambassador of Democratic People’s Republic of Korea H.E. Chu Changman and Ambassador of Islamic Republic of Iran to Pakistan H.E. Dr. Raza Amiri-Moghdam various ambassadors, defense attachés, and senior officials, making it a momentous occasion of diplomatic engagement and mutual respect.
Defender of the Fatherland Day traces its origins to the formation of the Red Army on February 23, 1918, when volunteers were first enlisted following a decree signed by Vladimir Lenin. Over the decades, the day has evolved, reflecting Russia’s military heritage and honoring those who have defended the nation in various historical periods.
Originally known as Red Army and Navy Day (1923-1946) and later as Soviet Army and Navy Day (1946-1992), the celebration underwent several renaming phases before being officially designated as Defender of the Fatherland Day in 1995. In 2002, February 23 was declared a national holiday in Russia, marking its importance as a day of military remembrance and patriotism.
The formal proceedings commenced with the national anthems of Russia and Pakistan, symbolizing the strong and enduring friendship between the two nations. Ambassador Albert P. Khorev, alongside Defence Attaché Colonel Vadim N. Fenchenko, Senator Sehar Kamran, and Chief Guest Vice Admiral Abdul Samad HI (M), led a ceremonial cake-cutting as a gesture of unity and shared respect.
In his address, Colonel Vadim N. Fenchenko emphasized the importance of honoring past and present military heroes. “This holiday is a tribute to those who have displayed immense courage in defense of their homeland. The sacrifices of our soldiers stand as a testament to the strength and resilience of our nation,” he remarked.
The event provided a unique platform for engagement between diplomatic and military representatives, fostering people-to-people connections and reinforcing bilateral cooperation.
One of the key highlights of the evening was the announcement by the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, declaring 2025 as the Year of the Defender of the Fatherland. The declaration aims to commemorate military heroism across generations, particularly in light of the 80th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War. “The coming year will be a tribute to all those who have fought for the Motherland, from historical battles to the present,” Colonel Fenchenko stated. The theme aligns with Russia’s national priorities, emphasizing patriotism, historical remembrance, and intergenerational respect for defenders of the nation.
The celebration is expected to include large-scale commemorations, exhibitions, and tributes, reinforcing the legacy of military service and sacrifice. Victory will be ours,” he stated, underlining Russia’s stance on its military strategies.
