Huawei and HEC launch Free ICT Training under “Seeds for the Future” Programme 2020

Isamabad : Huawei and HEC are going to offer free training in ICT skills to 30 undergraduate students across the country as part of Huawei Seeds for The Future Program 2020. In the last 5 years, around 55 students from across the country have been sent to China for 2 weeks training on the Chinese Culture and ICT Skills to further hone their career skills. This year due to COVID-19, HEC and Huawei will arrange the program virtually from 21st September to 25th September 2020.

The Huawei Technologies  (Pvt). Ltd Pakistan and The Higher education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan are inviting application from potential Pakistani undergraduate students  under Huawei’s “Seeds for the Future” programme 2020.

Huawei will organize online training for 30 outstanding Pakistani students in the field of ICT from September 21-25,2020. The Selected students will be able to obtain valuable cutting-edge ICT Knowledge developed by Huawei’s Headquarters and experience a cross culture communication virtually.

Top two students will be selected and sent to china for the learning tour in early 2021 together with students from around the world. Top ten students will be provided Huawei souvenirs for their participation.

The application procedure is as follows:

  • Apply through HEC online application portal https://seedsprogramme.hec.gov.pk
  • please follow the instructions and fill out the online application completely and submit it.
  • HEC reserves the right to conduct interviews of initially shortlisted candidates.
  • Incomplete or saved application on HEC online portal will not be considered.
  • The recommendation of nominating agency i.e. HEC will be final and binding.

It must be noted that the minimum CGPA required for the program is 3.5 or above. Students who are entering their 7th or 8th semester can apply for the program or if they are recent graduates, they are also eligible. Following is the detailed eligibility criteria:

  • Be a Pakistani/AJK national & permanent resident of Pakistan/AJK. Dual nationality holders are not eligible
  • Majoring in disciplines/subjects such as Information and Communication Technology, Computer Science, Information Technology, Business Informatics, Multimedia & Digital Arts, Software Engineering, Information Systems, Computer Engineering, Electrical Communication Engineering, Telecom Engineering, Electronics Engineering
  • Students who are currently enrolled in final year of ICT related Undergraduate degrees (four years program only with 7th Semester & 8th Semester) with minimum CGPA of 3.5 out of 4.
  • Students who have completed their four years Undergraduate ICT related degrees with minimum CGPA of 3.5 out of 4.
  • Less than 24 years old on closing date of application
  • Demonstrate excellent academic acumen, speak English fluently
  • Have a strong interest in Information Communication & Technology and related fields
  • With personal computer equipment and strong internet connection
  • Selected students must be available during online training sessions (from 21st to 25th September, 2020)
  • Final selection will be based on academic excellence & Federal Govt. quota policy
  • In case of final award, selected candidates will not be able to withdraw

Around 30 students from across the country will be trained by Huawei after final selection by HEC. The deadline for submission of applications is 14th September 2020.

Govt Notifies SEZ Status for Allama Iqbal Industrial City

Islamabad: The Prime Minister’s Office, Board of Investment (BOI), being the secretariat for the apex SEZ’s approving body (Board of Approval) has notified SEZ status for Allama Iqbal Industrial City and allowed sale of plot in 03 different SEZs including Allama Iqbal Industrial City (AIIC), Hub and Bostan.

The notification in this regard for AIIC was issued today by the Secretary BOI, Ms. Fareena Mazhar being Secretary of the Board of Approval for SEZs.
The government further chartered 03 SEZs Committees of AIIC, Bostan and Hub SEZs, allowing thereby the sale of plots in the respective SEZs. The SEZ committees shall have responsibilities to administer and enforce SEZ benefits and rules as well as provide facilitation between the SEZ, its enterprises and the government.
Minister of State/ Chairman Board of Investment (BOI), Mr. Atif R. Bokhari, in a statement here expressed satisfaction over the progress on SEZs’ development. He said that it is high time for all of us to tap the opportunities being provided by Belt & Road Initiative in the shape of Industrial Cooperation (IC) under China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). He pointed out that private sector should come forward and take the leading role in this second phase of CPEC. He appreciated Project Management Unit BOI on CPEC-IC for its role in ensuring a teamwork of the federal and provincial governments which helped in removing hurdles that were hindering the progress on SEZs.
Secretary BOI, Ms. Fareena Mazhar has termed the day as a special day in the journey of SEZ’s development. She stated that establishment of the new SEZs would help to achieve the goals of industrialization such as capitalizing Investment Inflow, inclusive economic development, creation of jobs and export generation. She informed that serious efforts for provision of gas and electricity are underway to ensure provision of these basic utilities alongside development of the new SEZs.
The Allama Iqbal Industrial City Faisalabad is being developed by Faisalabad Industrial Estate Development and Management Company (FIEDMC) with total area of 2800 acres by targeting to establish industries in Textile; Engineering; Electrical and Electronics; Chemical Paints; Agriculture and Food Processing; Steel and Packaging sectors. It is expected that the zone will help to create 249,477 direct and indirect jobs for local population besides attracting domestic and foreign investment upto the tune of RS. 357 billion.

Locust can migrate from Rajhastan to Cholistan and Tharparkar: Fakhar Imam

Islamabad:Locust can migrate from Rajhastan(India) to Cholistan and Tharparkar(Pakistan).This was stated by Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research(NFSR),Syed Fakhar Imam while chairing the meeting of National Locusts Control Centre(NLCC) on Friday.Lieutenant General Moazzam Ejaz,Coordinator NLCC also co chaired the meeting.Till now 55831700 Hectares(HA) have been surveyed and 1127000HA have been treated.It was mentioned that locust is limited only 1 district of the country i.e. Lasbella.

FAO briefed about locust forecast.As per the forecast,in Southwest Asia, the situation has improved dramatically as a result of intensive survey and control operations in India and Pakistan. Nevertheless, limited breeding continues in southeast Sindh and Lasbella west of Karachi in Pakistan.Desert Locust situation has improved in Southwest Asia but remains serious in Yemen and parts of East Africa. There is concern that the situation could deteriorate along both sides of the Red Sea.

In East Africa, aerial control operations continue against low numbers of immature swarms that persist in northwest Kenya and northeast Somalia. Breeding is underway in north and northeast Ethiopia where control teams are treating numerous hopper bands and groups that continue to form. The situation is expected to prevail during the remainder of September.

Federal Minister asked Balochistan to focus on Lasbella and Uthal for survey and control operation.Sindh mentioned that they are still continuing their survey.Punjab mentioned that they have done control operation in Bahawalnagar and Bahawalpur.KPK mentioned that they are still doing intensive survey.

PACRA assigns rating of ‘AA+’ for long term & A1+ for short term to NTDC- Another Milestone Achieved

Lahore -Pakistan Credit Rating Agency (PACRA) has assigned initial entity rating of ‘AA+’ for long term and A1+ for short term to National Transmission and Despatch Company (NTDC), while the outlook of NTDC is forecasted as ‘stable’ on the basis of this rating.

The spokesman said that another milestone has been achieved by NTDC, that the rating reflects Company’s strategic importance in Power Sector. NTDC is mandated to construct, maintain and operate an integrated network of transmission lines and grid stations of 220 kV and above to evacuate power from an installed generation capacity of over 36,000 MW.
The spokesman informed that NTDC’s low business risk emanates from its leading market position and strong uphold on transmission system in terms of its technical and business expertise. NTDC’s operational expenses being part of tariff determination mechanism reflect positively on the Company’s risk profile and its business and growth prospects. It is worth mentioning that transmission losses of NTDC are aligned with the globally accepted parameters.

The spokesman said that ratings also take into account NTDC’s moderate financial risk originating from sizeable equity, sound capital structure which comprises of mainly local financing as well as foreign loans (from multilateral agencies) are provided under relent loan policy with inherent protection against currency and foreign exchange risk.

Additionally, working capital management is a reflective of strong internal cash generation and effective management of circular debt by adjusting receivables with loans repayments on foreign relent loans. The ratings also incorporate NTDC’s strengthened position resulting through completion of 31 expansion projects. Power evacuation from Dasu Hydro Power Project, Diamer Basha Dam,870 MW Suki Kinari, 2160 MW Dasu Hydropower Project, 720 MW Karot Hydropower Project,CASA-1000 project and ± 660 kV HVDC Matiari-Lahore Transmission Line project are some of Company’s huge and magnificent projects in pipeline.

The spokesman further said that, effective management of upcoming projects, in addition to ERP system implementation, consistency in financial profile and risk matrixes remains critical for the ratings. Meanwhile, reconciliation of outstanding adjustments regarding Business Transfer Agreements and sustained competitive positioning is also imperative.

PAKISTAN, TO UTILIZE ITS POTENTIAL OF REGIONAL CONNECTIVITY BY LINKING LANDLOCKED CENTRAL ASIAN REPUBLICS TO THE WORLD THROUGH ITS SEAPORTS

Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs, Syed Ali Haider Zaidi was called on by Deputy Prime Minister for Investment and Foreign Trade, Mr Sardor Umurzakov to discuss establishment of trade routes and utilization of Pakistani seaports to connect CARs to the world. The Uzbek delegation included First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, First Deputy Minister for Foreign Trade and Investments, Deputy Minister of Transport and Chairman of Uzbekistan Airways JSC. Uzbekistan, a landlocked Central Asian Republic has export markets in gulf countries, southeast Asia, Europe and Africa. The cheapest route is through Pakistani ports. A dedicated terminal for goods from the Central Asian States and ease in the transit after the completion of ML1 project was discussed in detail. A dedicated shipping fleet for central Asian exports was also proposed. The trade volume of Uzbekistan and Pakistan has increased significantly in the past couple of years and with establishing an efficient trade corridor it will increase manifold. Formation of a Joint Working group was also proposed to further discuss the modalities for the execution of this plan. Pakistan has the requisite environment to benefit from this opportunity as the incumbent government’s business friendly policies and the new shipping policy will strengthen Pakistan’s role as the shortest and cheapest route to the world, hence making it a gateway to Central, South and Southeast Asia.

HarmonyOS 2.0: Officially Open Source with Mobile HarmonyOS Beta Available to Developers by Year End

Huawei announced its all-scenario experience operating system, HarmonyOS, back in 2019. Since then, a robust line-up of devices has been developed for the system, facilitating quick device discovery, instant connection, hardware collaboration, and resource sharing between multiple smart devices. HarmonyOS 2.0 is announced today, bringing a comprehensive upgrade to its existing distributed capabilities, including software bus, data management, and security. Huawei also introduced an adaptive UX framework that allows developers to quickly reach tens of millions of new devices and users. 

With the latest update, HarmonyOS will officially be open-source and developers will be able to gain access to emulators, SDK packages, and IDE tools. The open source project, which is donated to Open Atom Foundation, will be launched in stages with a mobile HarmonyOS beta release planned firstly for Chinese developers at the end of 2020. Richard Yu announced the roadmap for HarmonyOS in his keynote speech. “Starting on 10 September, HarmonyOS is open to 128KB-128MB IoT devices, such as smart TVs, wearables, cars and more. In April 2021, we will open it to 128MB-4GB devices and in October 2021, HarmonyOS will be opened for devices above 4GB,” he said.

Based on the distributed technology in HarmonyOS, the newly released EMUI 11 enables interaction beyond smartphones. The new operating system allows devices interact with HarmonyOS-based IoT devices, bringing a unique all-scenario experience to users, including using the camera of a bigger-screen device for video calling. The process is powered by the touchless connection between smartphones and HarmonyOS-based home devices, enabling screen projection and more. 

Huawei Mobile Services (HMS) Ecosystem: Breaking Ground as The World’s Third Largest Mobile App Ecosystem

With the support of more 1.8 million registered developers worldwide, AppGallery and the HMS ecosystem has continued to show progress this year. AppGallery currently has over 96,000 apps integrated with HMS Core and more than 490 million global active users. In addition, it also achieved a record 261 billion app downloads and distributions between January and August 2020. 

In a single year, HMS Core 5.0’s open capabilities have increased from 14 Kits to 56 Kits, while the number of APIs has jumped from 885 to 12,981 covering seven major areas, helping developers achieve innovation and simplify the development process.

For instance, the CG Kit in the Graphics field improves graphics, image quality and experience, as well as improving game screen rendering efficiency. SECP Aiming in the Right Direction, said Dr. Ishrat Husain, Advisor to the PM

Islamabad:  The Advisor to the PM, Dr. Ishrat Dr. Husain  paid a visit to the SECP headquarters here on Thursday  to hold meetings with the Chairman and Commissioners regarding ongoing policy reforms.

Dr. Husain was briefed in detail on the reforms, digital transformation roadmap and organizational development initiatives being undertaken at SECP.  While appreciating the  reform program and result-oriented approach, Dr. Husain stressed upon the need to carry on with the collaborative and consultative approach  involving all stakeholders. He expressed optimism for more listings, particularly through issuance of corporate debt securities by large players and asked to build on the successful listings and invite companies being establish in special economic zones under CPEC to meet funding needs through capital market. Appreciating the digital transformation efforts, he emphasized upon complete automation of internal and external processes to attain paperless environment by December 2021.

He emphasized that the government’s interest and focus is on strengthening institutions responsible for economic governance and that SECP is a vital part of it.  He added that SECP is one of the finest institutions that needs to be further strengthened considering its role as a regulator and as a facilitator.

He said that combination of quality human resource and cutting-edge technology, are critical to the success of all regulatory institutions, stating further that SECP should view itself as a broad-based regulator covering a large spectrum primarily hinged on its capital market.

Dr. Ishrat Husain also met recently hired Management Trainees, and shared key heuristics required to make an impact. He encouraged the new recruits to ensure absolute commitment, ownership, and hold highest standards of honesty and integrity to be problem solvers and to never compromise on ethical values.

Chairman SECP, Mr. Aamir Khan, in his closing remarks expressed his gratitude to Dr. Husain for his gracious presence and for  crucial support in making possible the first ever issuance of sovereign sukuk of Power Holding listed at PSX, arrangement of funding with SBP for project LEAP, promotion of foreign investment in Pakistan and priceless support in achieving critical tax reforms. Japanese Ambassador called to Minister IT

Japan Ambassador to Pakistan Kuninori Matsuda called on Federal Minister for IT and Telecommunication Syed Amin Ul Haque in his office on Thursday. Federal Minister for IT welcomed the Ambassador of Japan in his office and matters of mutual interests and IT and Telecommunication sector were discussed during the meeting. Both the sides agreed to increase cooperation in the field of IT and Telecommunication. Federal Minister for IT said that Pakistan and Japan are enjoying deep friendly relations. He said that Pakistan wanted to enhance its ties with Japan in all sectors especially IT and Telecommunication. He said that IT sector of Pakistan is rapidly growing. Talking about provision of broadband services across the country, the Federal Minister for IT said that Ministry of IT through its attached department Universal Service Fund (USF) was seriously working to bridge the digital divide between urban and rural areas of the country. He said that more than 20000 IT graduates are produced in Pakistan annually, adding that exchange of IT professionals between Pakistan and Japan will be very positive. Speaking on the occasion, the Ambassador of Japan said the growth of the IT sector of Pakistan is laudable. He also expressed grief over the loss of lives and damages due to recent rains and floods in Pakistan especially in Karachi, adding that Japan is ready to collaborate with Pakistan for the rehabilitation of Karachi. Senior officers of the Ministry of IT and Telecommunication was also present on the occasion.

ESTABLISHMENT OF FAST-TRACK COURTS FOR OVERSEAS PAKISTANIS IN FINAL PHASE – ZULFI BUKHARI

SAPM on Overseas Pakistanis and HRD, Syed Zulfikar Abbas Bukhari chaired a high powered committee meeting on Citizen Portal for the provinces of Sindh, KPK and Balochistan here on Wednesday. Officials from Prime Minister Delivery Unit – PMDU briefed the Committee about the status of complaints of the Overseas Pakistanis on Complaint portal. The Inspector Generals of Police of all provinces participated through video link. They apprised the committee about the high number of complaints by overseas Pakistanis were the matters pending in the courts. They showed their inability to intervene into matters which were already under hearing in different courts. “Establishment of Fast track courts for overseas Pakistanis is in its final phase”. SAPM said. He further said that the summary is with the Ministry of Law. Overseas Courts would be established once the summary is approved. SAPM Zulfikar Bukhari asked the members of the committee to ensure prompt resolution of complaints by Overseas Pakistanis. He further said that Overseas Pakisanis are the backbone of our economy. They send huge amount of foreign exchange. Its government policy to facilitate the overseas Pakistanis in all possible ways. SAPM further asked the provinces of Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhua to establish overseas commissions in their respective provinces. “Punjab Overseas Commission is a successful model. Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkua should follow the same model”. SAPM said. The meeting was attended by the Inspector Generals and Secretary labor of all the provinces and members from Ministry of Interior and Prime Minister Delivery Unit.
