Islamabad : Our Government took timely and effective measures to bring to the economy in a stable condition during the hard time of Covid-19 Pandemic; this was said by the Federal Minister for National Food Security & Research Syed Fakhar Imam while addressing a virtual session of FAO Ministerial Regional Conference today in Islamabad. He said that we have to be very alert in future for which we have made several up gradations in our health sector to deal with any challenges. He said that Pakistan is confronted with the Covid-19 pandemic which started in March this year. The COVID-19 pandemic spread in Pakistan like in many other countries across the globe, with over 305,000 confirmed cases, over 292,000 recovered and over 6400 deaths.
Syed Fakhar Imam said that Locust infestation is another disaster that has occurred at a time when the country is trying to cope with the COVID-19. The COVID-19, locust infestation and exposure to multiple disasters/shocks have compounded effect on the vulnerable households across Pakistan, particularly those living in rural areas and dependent subsistence agriculture-based livelihoods for their sustenance and survival. The multiple threats to food and nutrition security, their negative and cumulative impact, and the clear link between shocks and hunger reveal the fragility of current food production systems and their vulnerability to disasters. The COVID-19 emergency came at a time when Pakistan was already going through high inflation particularly food inflation, slow economic growth and high poverty and food insecurity, he added. Our provinces, districts & villages are in continuous collaboration we are continuously examining the situation in order to combat locust infestation effectively.
The Federal Minister said that due to aggravating COVID-19 situation, the Government of Pakistan imposed lockdown and restrictions on movements of goods and people in last week of March 2020. However, the Government tried its best to ensure that food and agriculture supply chain remain undisrupted, and allowed movement of food and agriculture items from rural to urban markets and within the country. Even in the lockdown, supply of livestock products, food, fruits and vegetables items were allowed to continue. Food and agriculture inputs shops/markets mostly remained opened in most of the areas across Pakistan, though with limited opening hours and days.
Syed Fakhar Imam said that unfortunately we could not fulfill our wheat target for this year as we were short of 1.5 Million Ton (MT) of our required yield due to which we had to import wheat to meet the consumer demand. Now that the imported wheat is arriving Pakistan, the prices will be settled.
Federal Minister said that the restrictions on movements have affected the livestock sector, which has 60.6% share in agriculture and around 11.7% in overall GDP. Both supply and demand for livestock products along with fruits and vegetables has reduced due to reduction in demand, and logistics movement restrictions.
Syed Fakhar Imam informed that in order to mitigate the negative impact of COVID-19 on overall economy, the Government of Pakistan has announced economic relief and stimulus package of Rs 1.24 trillion as part of its immediate response to COVID-19, which will also contribute to agriculture sector and agriculture value chains through its linkages with other sectors. He said that our government has announced a stimulus package of Rs. 100 billion, 50 billion each for small & medium industry and agricultural sector with a holding of 12.5 acres of land or below.
The Federal Minister thanked FAO for its continued support and collaboration of strengthening the agriculture sector and improving food security in Pakistan.

Foreign industry should not be preferred over local: Qaisar Khan

0

The federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) on Saturday said the foreign industry should not be promoted at the cost of local industry as it will result in closures, loss of jobs and revenue.

The decision to reduce duties on import of steel should be reviewed as it will damage the local industry which is already struggling to survive, said Vice President FPCCI Qaisar Khan Daudzai.

Talking to a group of large steel producers, he said that giving relaxation to the local industry will attract investment and reduce the price due to competition which will make construction etc. economical and help boost construction package of the PM.

He said that the per capita steel consumption in Pakistan is as low as 43 kilograms marring development while it is 62 kg in India, 1123 kg in South Korea while the global average is 214 kg.

Qaisar Daudzai said that local steel industry cannot compete with the steel producers of other countries as the overall situation and cost of doing business in the top ten steel producing countries that include China, India, Japan, US, South Korea, Russia, Germany, Turkey, Brazil and Iran are better than Pakistan.

On the other hand, he said, steel producers in Pakistan are facing many problems like the high cost of doing business, high tariff, extraordinary energy cost, competitiveness, lack of structural reforms and institutional support etc.

He said that giving free hand to foreign companies will not only bankrupt many local producers who have invested billions but also stoke unemployment, uncertainty, reduce revenue and stop further investment while the steel imports to fill the gap will cost an additional one billion dollars.

The overall situation must be improved before exposing the local industry to compete with foreign players, he demanded.

On World Cleanup Day 2020, the not for profit organization Network of Organizations Working with Persons with Disabilities (NOWPDP) organized an awareness session followed by a beach clean-up activity.

Improper waste disposal and littering has a significant environmental impact but one which can be reduced drastically through awareness, behavior change and relevant infrastructure.

Talking about NOWPDP’s commitment to anti-littering and World Cleanup Day through organizing this beach cleanup, Omair Ahmad, Executive Director NOWPDP said, Everyone knows littering has an environmental impact. It also adversely affects health and society. Positive change can only be achieved when we rally together as individuals, institutions, and society to take responsibility for a sustainable and inclusive future. We are humbled by the support of our partners including Philip Morris (Pakistan) Limited in our efforts.”

NOWPDP recently launched their UPCYCLE initiative, which emphasizes on creating anti-littering awareness, conducting cleanup activities and recycling plastic into reusable items while training and employing persons with disabilities in the entire process. The project trainees also participated in the drive.

Present at the cleanup site, Sadia Dada, Director Communications Philip Morris (Pakistan) Limited (“PMPKL”) said: “The best way to reduce littering is to drive awareness and behavioral change which is why we are here today. We recognize that corporate sector has an important role to play in supporting action on littering and are committed to add our efforts to further the cause. This year, our parent company Philip Morris International announced in our Integrated Report 2019 the global aim to achieve a 50 percent reduction of the plastic litter from our products by 2025, compared to a 2021 baseline.”

Taimur, a project trainee of NOWPDP’s Upcycle initiative commented, “The responsibility and the urgency for the need to counter littering lies with each one of us and I am proud to be part of the solution rather than the problem.”

Sidra Zahid, another volunteer who had registered for the clean-up drive on social media shared, “There is so much trash everywhere. Last month citizens of Karachi saw firsthand how litter can compound urban flooding. I can no longer be a silent spectator. The world is need of an urgent clean up!”

As part of this partnership, aside from conducting a series of awareness sessions on littering and conducting anti-littering drives, NOWPDP will also set up a recycling facility whereby litter from select litter hotspots around Karachi will be collected, sorted and recycled into reusable items. The project will also build the capacity of and empower Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) through inclusion in economic activities while addressing the serous civic issue of littering which impacts diverse locations—from streets and city parks to beaches and oceans.

World Cleanup Day is a global event which was also observed at Clifton Beach, Sea View and was attended by volunteers who had signed up for the event, as well as employees of NOWPDP and representatives from PMPKL.

World Cleanup Day started in the small country of Estonia, when 50 thousand people cleaned the country in just one day.  Over 20 million people in 180 countries and territories joined World Cleanup Day 2019.
