Battling Cancer::: Urgent Policy Action Needed to Curb Unhealthy Food Consumption in PakistanSanullah Ghumman

World comes together to observe World Cancer Day on February 4th. Annually 10 million deaths are associated with cancer globally.  In Pakistan situation is same. Non communicable diseases claims the lives of almost 2100 people daily, with cancer being significant factor in this statistic. These casualties of different age groups, including the young and those in their productive years.   There deaths not only cause a social loss for their family but it also adds to an economic loss of the country as these individuals are unable to contribute to economic activities.  it is imperative for Pakistan must confront a pressing health issue that often goes unnoticed-the link between cancer and the consumption of unhealthy foods. In recent years, the rise in cancer has been alarming, with lifestyle factors playing a significant role in the concerning trend.  Among these factors, the excessive consumption of sugary drinks and ultra-processed foods has emerged as a silent culprit, contributing to the growing cancer burden in the country.

Studies have consistently shown a direct correlation between a diet high in sugar and ultra-processed foods and an increased list of developing various types of cancer. Pakistan has witnessed a surge in the availability and consumption of such products, often leading to detrimental health outcomes. The need for urgent policy actions to address this issue is paramount, and World Cancer Day as a poignant reminder for the government to take decisive steps to protect the health of its citizens.

The impact of sugary drinks on cancer risk cannot be overstated. These beverages are not only high in empty calories but also contribute to weight gain and obesity – both established risk factors for cancer. Ultra-processed foods, characterized by their high levels of additives, preservatives, and refined ingredients, have also been implicated in the rise of cancer cases. These products often lack essential nutrients and are associated with an increased risk of obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases – all of which are interconnected with cancer development.

To combat this growing health crisis, the government of Pakistan must consider implementing comprehensive policy measures aimed at reducing the consumption of unhealthy foods. These actions could include an increase in taxes on sugary drinks which is an evidence-based first and most effective policy action to reduce the consumption of these unhealthy drinks. Similarly, Front of Pack Nutrition Labels on Ultra-processed foods increases the consumers’ awareness of healthy food choices.

On World Cancer Day, let us unite in the fight against this pervasive disease by addressing one of its preventive causes. The government of Pakistan must take decisive action to create an environment that fosters healthier food choices, safeguarding the well-being of its citizens and working towards a future free from the burden of preventable cancers
