Islamabad: Federal Minister for national food security and research, Syed Fakhar Imam met with member of Vehari Chamber of Commerce in the minister’s office today. It was discussed that Vehari, once Pakistan’s leading cotton producing district has now become A multicrop district. Because of the pink bollwarm and white fly infestation Cotton has become unfeasible to plant. The president of Vehari chamber of commerce said that cotton cannot be produced at the same rate until a better, pest resistant seed is developed.Moreover, Vehari is the third largest poultry producing district after Okara and Lahore as well as large amounts of tomatoes, onions and mangoes are also produced in Vehari.
The minister recognized Vehari’s potential in the agricultural sector and suggested industrialization in the sector. Many suggestions were made by members of the chamber including vye addition and grain station setups in the district. The president also seeked the ministry’s help to provide vocational trainings for the agriculturalists. The minister said that education is first and foremost to develop Pakistan to become a successful Agroeconomy. Problems such as water table, investment, pests and storage were discussed in depth. Vehari is to be set up and Industrial zone. Conclusively remarks were made for the betterment of one of Pakistan’s best agricultural districts that can help increase exports and facilitate farmers.
