NATO Secretary-General: Our Position not changed in AfghanistanIslamabad: (Raja Furqan Ahmed) NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg has spoken to the Afghan president Ashraf Ghani on Monday, both discussed the peace process. In his tweet, Stoltenberg stated: “NATO’s position has not changed & our presence is conditions-based.” He further added: “We continue helping the Afghan security forces to ensure Afghanistan never again becomes a safe haven for international terrorism.”
This comes as the US force levels in Afghanistan have reached 2,500. Earlier President Donald Trump announced to withdraw US troops from Afghanistan.
Meanwhile, the US acting Defense Secretary, Christopher Miller also said in his statement that the United States is closer than ever to ending nearly two decades of war and welcoming in an Afghan-owned, Afghan-led peace process to achieve a political settlement and a permanent and comprehensive ceasefire.
On the other hand, NATO commented over the US troops drawdown, stating that the US made it clear, “they would continue to provide their enablers to our Resolute Support Mission”, but NATO’s position in this regard has not changed.
