Pakistan’s 78th Independence Day is being celebrated with patriotic fervour across the country, coinciding with nationwide festivities marking victory in the “Marka-e-Haq’.
The main ceremony is under way at Jinnah Stadium in Islamabad, attended by President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir as guests of honour.
The event has drawn the participation of the country’s top civil and military leadership, federal ministers, members of parliament, foreign diplomats, and citizens.
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif and Asifa Bhutto Zardari are also in attendance.
Proceedings began with the recitation of the Holy Quran and the national anthem, followed by an impressive march-past featuring the bands of all three armed forces.
President Zardari, PM Shehbaz and Field Marshal Munir joined other dignitaries in saluting the national flag.
The Pakistan Air Force enthralled spectators with aerobatic displays, while tanks, armoured vehicles, artillery, radars and other military equipment used in the ‘Marka-e-Haq are on public display at Islamabad’s Shakarparian Parade Ground.
Across the nation, streets, neighbourhoods and public squares are adorned with green and white flags, reflecting a celebratory atmosphere.
Citizens in cities and towns are chanting slogans of “Pakistan Zindabad” to mark both the independence milestone and the historic victory.
Meanwhile, the National Assembly unanimously passed a resolution paying rich tribute to the armed forces for their courageous defence of the motherland during the ‘Marka-e-Haq’, and to the people for their unwavering support.
The resolution reaffirmed the House’s commitment to safeguarding Pakistan’s sovereignty and integrity, and urged citizens to work together for the nation’s progress and prosperity.
Across the country, celebrations are in full swing, with streets, neighbourhoods, and cities draped in the green and white of the national flag.
