Hassan Nawaz Fined £5.2 Million by UK Tax Authorities for Evasion

Chaudhry Tabraiz Aurah

LONDON: The British government has declared Hassan Nawaz, son of former Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, a “tax defaulter” and imposed a fine of £5.2 million for failing to pay approximately £9.4 million in taxes for the period between April 5, 2015, and April 6, 2016.

The British tax authority, Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC), took action after discovering the tax evasion, marking another setback for Hassan Nawaz, who was recently embroiled in a high-profile banking corruption case.

Despite Hassan Nawaz’s declared bankruptcy, legal experts believe the fine may still be recovered, as UK laws do not allow tax evasion penalties to be waived, even in cases of insolvency.

The seriousness of the charges against Hassan Nawaz has intensified concerns over his financial troubles. Legal experts suggest that recovering the imposed fine remains a challenge, raising questions about whether British authorities will be able to enforce the payment.

The details of the British government’s action have been made public on the official HMRC website. Meanwhile, Hassan Nawaz’s legal team has yet to issue any response regarding the matter.
