ISLAMABAD—The Embassy of Poland in Islamabad celebrated a momentous occasion as AGHS Legal Aid Cell was awarded the esteemed Polish Prize of Sérgio Vieira de Mello for its exceptional contributions to human rights and justice. The award, established by Villa Decius Association in Krakow, Poland, recognizes individuals and organizations that champion human rights, intercultural dialogue, and the peaceful coexistence of societies, religions, and cultures.

A distinguished event hosted by the Polish Embassy brought together ambassadors, diplomats, human rights activists, and media personnel, including Munizae Jahangir and Sulema Jahangir, daughters of the renowned human rights defender, Asma Jahangir.

AGHS Legal Aid Cell Honored with Prestigious Polish Prize of Sérgio Vieira de MelloIn his opening remarks, Ambassador of Poland, H.E. Maciej Pisarski, extended a special welcome to dignitaries such as H.E. Olyntho Vieira (Ambassador of Brazil), H.E. Alex Berg von Linde (Ambassador of Sweden), Madam Fumiko (Deputy Representative of UNHCR), and H.E. Nicolas Galey (Ambassador of France). The ambassador highlighted the legacy of Sérgio Vieira de Mello, a Brazilian diplomat and human rights advocate, whose life and work inspired the award.

Ambassador Pisarski praised AGHS Legal Aid Cell for its dedication to providing free legal aid to the underprivileged, especially women and empowering a new generation of activists. Founded in 1980 by Asma Jahangir and her female colleagues, AGHS has become a beacon of hope for marginalized communities in Pakistan. The ambassador lauded AGHS for its fearless pursuit of justice and its role in upholding human dignity.

Executive Director of AGHS, Nida Ally, expressed gratitude for the honor, emphasizing that the award is a testament to the relentless efforts of the organization since the passing of its founder. She acknowledged the pivotal role of Munizae and Sulema Jahangir in continuing Asma Jahangir’s legacy and highlighted AGHS’s landmark achievements, including legal victories for women, minorities, and bonded laborers.

The French Ambassador also commended AGHS’s remarkable services, underscoring the significance of the Polish Prize of Sérgio Vieira de Mello in promoting human rights and tolerance.

This award not only celebrates the achievements of AGHS but also serves as a universal reminder of the importance of safeguarding human rights in a world increasingly challenged by authoritarianism. As Ambassador Pisarski aptly concluded, “There is good reason to celebrate, highlight the cause of human rights, and pay tribute to those who make a difference in people’s lives.
