Dear Editor,
I am writing to convey how deeply concerned I am about the recent global upsurge in Mpox (monkeypox) cases and the possible threat they pose to Pakistan. In light of the global health crisis that is growing, it is critical that our country takes decisive steps to stop the virus from spreading within its borders. A zoonotic virus called mpox has been growing alarmingly in a number of nations. Previously limited to Central and West Africa, the virus has now been found around the world, including Europe and the Americas. Similar to smallpox, mumps symptoms are characterized by fever, rash, and enlarged lymph nodes, albeit they are often less severe. Concerns have been expressed regarding the possibility of a pandemic, though, given its recent worldwide expansion. Pakistan might be seriously at risk if mpox were to spread throughout the nation due to its large population and inadequate healthcare system. The COVID-19 epidemic has taught us important lessons about the value of early discovery, quick action, and public awareness. Regretfully, in spite of these insights, we are still ill-equipped to deal with novel and developing illnesses. The government and public health authorities must immediately step up their surveillance at airports and other entry points where passengers from impacted areas may arrive. Public awareness efforts should also be started in order to inform the public about the signs and modes of transmission of mpox, which will help to ensure that any possible cases are quickly reported and isolated. In order to provide access to the most recent data and resources, partnerships with international health organizations should be expanded. Vaccination programs should also be taken into account, especially for high-risk populations. In order to contain such epidemics, the healthcare system must also be strengthened and have sufficient supply of antiviral drugs and personal protective equipment (PPE). In conclusion, even though the mpox virus may not yet be a major problem in Pakistan, the state of the world shows that we cannot afford to take things for granted. To stop the virus from spreading throughout our nation, quick action is needed. I implore the government and pertinent health authorities to give this matter top priority and to take the required actions to safeguard the wellbeing and security of our people.
