\nLahore: The Centre for Aerospace and Security Studies (CASS) Lahore organised an
\nevent titled, “Redefining Power: Geoeconomics, Technology and Security
\nin an era of Strategic Competition” on 19 August 2026. As an
\nindependent think tank, CASS Lahore organises academic events for
\nscholars and practitioners interested in national security in its wider
\ncontext. The event was attended by academics, intellectuals, and domain
\nexperts. Ms Sibra Waseem, a Research Assistant at CASS Lahore, delivered
\nthe opening address.
\nMr Haroon Sharif, Chairman, PREF, Islamabad, highlighted that Pakistan
\nneeds to build on its geopolitical relevance by translating strategic
\npartnerships and CPEC into investment, technology transfer, and
\nindustrial ecosystems. He highlighted opportunities arising from
\nPakistan’s strategic location. He underscored the need to diversify the
\ncountry’s energy mix and reduce vulnerability to imported oil,
\naccounting for 85 per cent of requirements. He stressed the need to
\ncreate opportunities for 4 million annual labour-market entrants.
\nAdditionally, he suggested focusing on sectors with potential for value
\naddition, productivity and exports, alongside knowledge and technology
\npartnerships, R&D and greater private-sector participation.
\nDr Safdar Sohail, Executive Director, SPRC, Islamabad, emphasised the
\nneed to link Pakistan’s geopolitical relationships with economic
\ntransformation by converting strategic opportunities, particularly
\nthrough the US and CPEC, into manufacturing capacity, technology
\npartnerships and export competitiveness. Given Pakistan’s narrow export
\nbase, he stressed the importance of development finance and industrial
\npolicy. He highlighted the provinces’ role following the 18th Amendment,
\nalongside better data, standards and integration of finance,
\nmanufacturing and SMEs to build a self-sustaining economy. Taking
\ndiscussion further, he also commended the PAF for its decisive victory
\nin the May 2025 war, even in the face of severe financial constraints.
\nIn his concluding remarks, Air Marshal Asim Suleiman (Retd), President,
\nCASS, Lahore, emphasised that military power remains essential, but
\neconomy, technology, and national security are becoming interconnected,
\nwith disruption in one affecting others. For Pakistan, this
\ntransformation is significant given its geostrategic location,
\nconnectivity and growing digital economy, which must be converted into
\nsustainable economic gains. Furthermore, he underscored a growth
\nstrategy that stands behind the strong while ensuring a level playing
\nfield for development. Highlighting the significance of human capital
\ndevelopment, he cited Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Baber Sidhu’s
\nvision of strengthening PAF by harnessing best available human resources
\nand wisely spending the PAF resources, which contributed to Pakistan’s
\nsuccess during Marka-e-Haq.
\nThe event concluded with a lively interactive session. It highlighted
\neconomic geography, GDP growth model, and supporting policies as
\npowerful tool. The participants appreciated CASS Lahore’s initiative in
