Its innumerable lights stretched towards the horizon, yet, beneath the ceaseless clamour of the metropolis, an austere and almost metaphysical question seemed to have taken its seat between two interlocutors. One, gazing through the window into the nocturnal vastness, asked, “Do you know who murdered Mir Raza Ali?” After a prolonged silence, the other replied, “Had we known, the question itself would have ceased to exist.” The first observed, “And yet names of alleged murderers are already circulating throughout the city.” “Names circulate,” came the answer, “but truth does not circulate with equal facility. Truth must be pursued, step by painstaking step, until it arrives at the tribunal of evidence.” “Then do you maintain,” the first asked, “that everything we hear is false?” “By no means. I maintain only that every piece of information may constitute a stairway towards truth, but no stairway, merely by being climbed, becomes the destination.” He paused and then continued: “Consider the circumstances: a young man leaves his home, fails to return, is discovered dead the following day, bears indications of bodily trauma, and appears to have sustained a gunshot wound entering from the rear. Can such a sequence reasonably be dismissed as mere coincidence?” “No.” “Then what follows?” “The gates of investigation must open.” “And if, before those gates, social media has already installed a murderer upon the scaffold?” The answer came quietly: “Then the first duty of investigation is to liberate itself from that very clamour. Rumour possesses the peculiar genius of manufacturing an answer before the question has even been properly formulated; justice, by contrast, insists upon completing the question before permitting itself the luxury of an answer.”

After another interval of silence, the first interlocutor resumed: “There is CCTV footage showing the pistol; there is his departure in the early morning; there is the taxi journey towards Gulistan-e-Johar; there is the subsequent cessation of his mobile signal; and then there is the motorcycle which reportedly remained at the place where his body was ultimately discovered for approximately twenty-two seconds. Do not these fragments collectively reveal the countenance of the murderer?” “No,” came the reply. “They reveal fragments of mirrors.” “What distinction is there between the two?” “A face is an actuality; a mirror is merely a possible representation of one. The instant you mistake a fragment for the entire visage, you have abandoned investigation and entered the territory of conjecture.” “But the motorcycle?” “It is a substantial lead.” “Then its rider was the murderer?” “Not necessarily.” “Why?” “Because a lead may conduct us towards a murderer; the lead itself is not the murderer. If the motorcycle’s registration can be established, its rider identified, its movements reconstructed, and its connection with Mir Raza’s final movements independently corroborated, then the scattered fragments begin to constitute a coherent evidentiary chain. Courts do not adjudicate upon noise; they examine chains of proof.” The first fell silent. Then he asked, “And the mobile telephone?” “Perhaps the most reticent witness in the entire narrative. Human beings can deceive with words; digital chronology, at times, possesses the capacity to strip falsehood of its accumulated dust. The final call, the final message, the last known location, deleted information, financial transactions these are traces whose testimony may prove more inexorable than that of the human tongue.”

“Then,” the first asked, “does the secret lie within the financial sphere? Crores in debts, investments, business partnerships, and the alleged urgent request for three crore rupees could these constitute the motive?” “They may,” replied the other, “but possibility and proof are not synonymous.” “If a person owed him money?” “Then he was indebted to him.” “If there had been a commercial dispute?” “Then he was a party to a dispute.” “If the family entertained suspicions against someone?” “Then that person becomes a subject of investigation.” “And the murderer?” “He becomes the murderer only when evidence binds him to the crime.” “Then what of Abid?” “Where is the evidence?” “Muni?” “Where is the evidence?” “The business associate?” “Where is the evidence?” Question followed question, and before every name there appeared the same uncompromising threshold: Where is the evidence? The first, somewhat disturbed, asked, “Do you assign no value whatsoever to human intuition?” “I do,” came the answer, “but intuition may inaugurate an investigation; it cannot legitimately conclude one. Suspicion gives birth to inquiry; judgment must be begotten by proof.” After a moment he added: “Reflect upon the consequence if our suspicion proves erroneous. We shall not merely have uttered an accusation against an individual; we shall have cast a stone upon the life, honour, and family of an innocent person, and the ripples of that act may travel far beyond our sight.”

The night had grown still deeper. The first asked, “And the post-mortem examination?” “The silent grammar of the body.” “And the exhumation?” “An attempt to read that silent grammar anew.” “DNA?” “The scientific alphabet of identification.” “Gunshot residue?” “A trace.” “The bodily injuries?” “Another trace.” “The wound caused by a bullet entering from the rear?” “Yet another trace.” “Can the murderer not therefore be discovered by assembling all these fragments?” “He may be,” the answer came, “provided that they ultimately converge into a coherent evidentiary narrative. Yet the dignity of science consists precisely in its refusal to compel evidence into yielding a conclusion already desired by the investigator. Science allows evidence to speak in its own language.” “And if every piece of evidence points in a different direction?” “Then the investigation requires further time.” “And if time passes?” “Then the burden upon justice becomes heavier.” “And if society begins to clamour?” “Then the preservation of silent evidence becomes all the more imperative.” He paused before adding: “Remember this: the true strength of a state is not demonstrated by the speed with which it arrests someone; it is demonstrated by the integrity with which it proceeds towards the person who is actually responsible.”

The first remained silent for a considerable while and eventually said, almost in a whisper, “I now suspect that we have been asking the wrong question.” “Why?” “We have been asking, ‘Who is the murderer?’ Perhaps we ought first to ask, ‘What is the truth?’” “Now,” replied the other, “you have approached the threshold of the real question.” “And where shall truth be found?” “Not necessarily where the noise is loudest, but where the evidence corroborates itself.” “Then what, ultimately, does the Mir Raza Ali case teach us?” The other looked through the window. The lights of Karachi remained unchanged, yet the question had acquired an altogether deeper dimension. “It teaches us,” he said, “not merely how to pursue a murderer, but how to distinguish reality from conjecture. The pistol, the mobile telephone, the Apple Watch, the CCTV recordings, the motorcycle, the financial connections, the forensic specimens, and the post-mortem findings are all knocks upon the door of truth. Yet that door will open only when those knocks converge upon one demonstrable reality.” “And if they do?” “Then the murderer’s name will not emerge from the rhetoric of a columnist, the assertion of a police officer, or the clamour of social media. The evidence itself will carry him before the court.”

The two men then fell silent. Outside, Karachi continued its habitual restlessness, indifferent to the philosophical gravity of the question. Yet within that silence another question seemed gradually to emerge: “Is justice merely the punishment of a murderer?” Perhaps the nocturnal wind itself supplied the answer: “No. Before punishment, justice requires the establishment of a certainty that the person called a murderer is, in fact, the murderer.” For when a state hastily condemns the innocent, it does not merely deprive one human being of justice; it wounds the sanctity of its own juridical order. But when it takes the necessary time and arrives at truth through evidence, the silence of the murdered acquires a voice. The story of Mir Raza Ali has not yet reached its final chapter. Its characters remain partially obscured; certain names have entered the sphere of discussion; certain routes remain suspicious; some pieces of evidence remain mute; and other fragments are still within laboratories, awaiting the language through which science may render them intelligible. Thus the most intellectually honest answer, for the present, remains this: Who is the murderer? We do not yet know. But where is the truth? It lies upon the path of evidence. And perhaps this is precisely the point at which a single murder ceases to be merely a criminal mystery and becomes one of the oldest questions of civilisation itself: Do we genuinely desire the truth or merely the answer that accords with what we already wish to believe?

The writer is a recipient of the Sanad-e-Imtiaz and a distinguished senior analyst, scholar, and PhD holder.
